What’s in a Name: The Goddess’s Illusion

And here are the hidden meanings behind the names in The Goddess’s Illusion…

The heroine is Katherine Elizabeth Gernand (née Sutton), the Countess of Blaine, although she goes by Kit. All of Kit’s birth names are English, as are her parents’ names. Katherine means “pure”, and Elizabeth means “my good is an oath”—both are fitting for a lady whose story is about serving the Goddess. Sutton is an English surname that comes from various places, meaning “south town.” For Kit, her married surname and title don’t have hidden meanings for her, but for the family she married into, so I’ll go into those when I write about Edouard’s names.

The hero is Priest Melchior Eren Hawke, although he goes by Mel. Melchior is the name traditionally assigned to one of the wise men (or Magi / three kings) who visited the newborn Jesus. Eren is Turkish and means “saint.” Both names allude to Mel’s devotion to the Goddess but with an exotic flare. As with his brothers, his surname Hawke is a form of “hawk” because their ancestors were warriors who helped found Calatini.
