Thank you for explaining the difference between erase and negation spells. One of my mentors has begun having recurring dreams about grotesque creatures lately, mostly fornicating goats, backbiting snakes, and mauling lions. Naturally, these dreams—nightmares truthfully—have disturbed him, and I wondered if there was any magical power behind them. Could you tell me about the power of dreams?

Dear Mr. Thyme,

I’m very sorry your mentor is suffering such terrifying nightmares. Hopefully, he stops having them soon, although he needn’t worry that his dreams have magical power behind them.

For most people (even witches), dreams are simply the mind’s way of processing their life and information their conscious mind can’t accept yet. However, dreams for the rare witches possessing foresight (mostly seers) can be prophetic, while dreams the rare witches possessing hindsight (again mostly seers) can be visions of the past. For others, dreams usually only have magical power behind them when they’re sent by nightmara, the gods, or others with the power over dreams. Very occasionally, dreams can have magical power behind them if the dreamer is under an extremely powerful spell or curse, usually one cast by a Rhiannon-descendant witch or a magical creature. However, such dreams are exceedingly rare because of the amount of power it requires to control dreams and doing so has little practical value (other than terrifying someone in the case of nightmares or comforting/encouraging them in the case of happy dreams.)
