Unicorns
from March’s Creatures Beyond the Walle
One of the horse-like magical creatures of Damensea, unicorns are dazzling creatures that embody purity, grace, and healing. They are typically white (although they can also be light gray or tan) with pale eyes (typically blue, gray, or silver) and a long, straight spiral horn in the center of their forehead. This spiral horn is incredibly sharp and one of the unicorn’s main defenses as well as possesses magical powers. For instance, they use their horn to make formerly impure or poisoned water into unicorn water, which then has strong magical, healing, and purifying properties.
Like horses and other horse-like magical creatures, unicorns are matriarchal and live in herds. Their dominant mare is the one with the strongest ability to purify and heal. They often lead their herd into poisoned areas, and they remain there until the land is healed and healthy once more. Unicorn lands are idyllic with sparkling lakes of unicorn water, lush gardens full of white flowers, and peaceful views that are extremely private. The few that visit unicorn lands find them blissful and refreshing, but some complain that the unicorns serve them no meat or other food derived from animals.
Similar to nightmara, unicorns communicate with their thoughts and can do so with anyone they choose, although most are shy and prefer to avoid creatures who aren’t unicorns. Outside of other unicorns or their allies (typically other horse-like magical creatures), unicorns often only approach those pure of heart, which is why some believe that unicorns adore virgins and can be trapped using one as bait. (Not the truth, but people still believe it.)
As with nightmara, humans have foolishly attempted to enslave unicorns to harness their magical powers. However, the unicorns did not handle that with a treaty because they don’t need to live among humans. Instead, they avoid humans unless recommended to them by those they trust or they sense the humans possess pure hearts or healing magic.
Finally, in addition to ordinary unicorns, rainbow unicorns also exist, although they are especially rare and hardly ever seen south of the Walle. They possess white coats that have an opalescent sheen containing every color of the rainbow, and their eyes continually shift colors along the spectrum of a rainbow then back again. More secretive than ordinary unicorns, rainbow unicorns are likely to flee when seen by outsiders. They’re also the favorite prey of manticores. Rainbow unicorns and ordinary unicorns aren’t different creatures, so they can breed together.
