The Juliet-Mordred Letters

The Juliet-Mordred Letters

I first created the Juliet-Mordred letters as an interesting way to explain magic in Damensea (rather than just reference books.) However, as I wrote more of them and discovered more about Juliet and Mordred, their letters grew into more. As Juliet learns during The Beast Curse, Oakmoor began writing her two months after his erratic magical powers inexplicably appeared because he became frustrated with his progress learning from reference books. (Having been cursed at seventeen, he was too wary to trust a witch to instruct him about powers that appeared thirty years later than they should have.)

Oakmoor wrote to Juliet using his often-forgotten first and middle names to conceal his identity. (Given their fraught relationship, he couldn’t write Juliet as himself.) His first letter to her is A Lunar Cleansing Spell, and he pretends to be a young witch from the town closest to Oakmoor Castle with two neglectful mentors. Oakmoor writes to Juliet with all his magic questions, and they exchange one to two letters a month at first using Calatini’s magical transport system for letters and small parcels run by the Ministry of Health and Community.

A year after they’ve exchanged letters, Oakmoor creates a pair of transport boxes so he and Juliet can exchange letters more frequently. After this, he writes to Juliet weekly—except when he fears that he revealed too much in his previous letter. During The Beast Curse, he writes three letters to Juliet: Flying Carpets, Wards, and Trap Spells (which is his final letter as Mordred.)

Clearly, more Juliet-Mordred letters exist than I’ve currently published as book extras, so you’ll continue seeing them. 🙂
