Ormas

from Parkstone’s The History of Damensea

At around the center of Calatini’s coast, Ormas is the kingdom’s capital and largest port, and has existed before Calatini’s founding a millennium ago. Originally called Orm then Ormastra, it was the first city settled by the Lystran nobles fleeing the destruction of Oress during the catastrophic Stone Wars. The construction of palace at the heart of Ormas began even before the young Calator was elected as king. The construction of the Goddess’s Great Temple began at the same time, which is why both are built from the same white limestone.

With the royal Vireni family living in Ormas, the Goddess’s Great Temple, and the soon-thriving sea trade, Ormas swiftly became the most important city in Damensea. (Tsarka of the Tsarkan Empire wasn’t even huts at the time—the Tsarkans were still nomadic people roaming the southern wilds.)

Ormas has several important areas: 1) the palace and the surrounding noble townhouses, 2) the Goddess’s Great Temple and the nearby Learning Academy, Healer Academy, and Witch Academy, and 3) the sprawling and busy docks. The poor tend to live closer to the docks, while the affluent and nobles live nearer the palace. There are many fine parks inside the city as well as shopping areas. Like with housing, the poorer parks and shops are near the docks, while the better ones are closer to the palace, with the most fashionable shops being on Broad Street.

Ormas is surrounded by walls to defend the city with guarded gates in the north, east, and south. However, the guards possess charms allowing them to detect evildoers, so they rarely stop ordinary citizens of or visitors to Ormas.
